Grand Socialization Day
Saturday, February 26, 2011
It was a nice experience I had at the psychiatric hospital. We spend our duty for 8 days. At first, knowing that it is a mental home care, I felt elated and same time edgy about this. I am anxious on how to properly deal with people whose mental capabilities are distorted. I am also anxious to have conversation because I may say something that might provoke their feelings.

On our duty, I also have many knowings. Examples are, having schizophrenia, bipolar and other type of mental illness can really change lives. It needs not just an ordinary treatment. To cut it short -- it's really a serious condition. Like what I  had observed to all the patients. Their lives were structured. All the things that they do for their daily lives were "planned out", except if there were student nurses like us that handles them and conduct different therapies for them. Another is, they're not the kind of people I thought on the first place (scary & difficult to communicate with), actually they share life experiences that I somehow conclude that may lead to their present condition. Some were sexually abused, traumatized, unable to cope effectively, cannot handle difficult problems.

Of course there are instances that patients eliciting some of their illness' symptoms. They sometimes talk as if they're talking with someone. They're experiencing visual and auditory hallucinations, delusions or illusions. There are also flight of ideas or looseness of association. Patients also experiencing a waxy flexibility, rigidity and tremors that sometimes a side effects of their medications.

Although this duty requires a lot of energy, patience and MOLLAH! It was also a fun & once in a lifetime experience. :D
